New S50 ATEX fume fan sales explode

Mar 06 2024

In partnership with SEAT Ventilation, Axair have successfully rolled out the extension of their market leading range of fume fans with ATEX S50 polypropylene fan with an explosive number of enquiries for the enhanced product. The S50 is the largest and most powerful fan in their ‘S’ range, and is now available in an ATEX construction, certified for use in Zone 2 hazardous gas environments.

Responding to market demand for a larger ATEX certified fume and gas offer, the ATEX S50 fan has been designed to extract fumes from highly corrosive or toxic environments where there is a risk of fire or explosion in the event of a rare or abnormal malfunction or leak. The latest product launch of the S50 ATEX, can achieve airflows up to 16000 m3/h and provide high air flow against medium system pressures.

SEAT is the leading EU manufacturer of plastic fans with more than 35 years of experience in fan manufacturing for the laboratory and fume markets. As the exclusive UK authorised representative for SEAT, Axair are proud to work closely with their supplier partner to deliver superior corrosive fume, chemical, ATEX and specially designed fan accessories to the UK market.

In applications involving the extraction of chemical fumes in hazardous environments it is essential to select fans that comply with the ATEX regulation. ATEX polypropylene fans are specifically designed and certified to operate safely in potentially explosive atmospheres. These fans incorporate features such as explosion proof motors, spark resistant construction materials in permissible pairings and their design characteristics incorporate maximum surface temperature limitations to minimise the risk of ignition through the auto ignition of flammable gases. When evaluating ATEX fans for fume extraction system, ensure they are certified for a specific hazardous zone. Consult with experts in ATEX compliance who will carry out a hazardous area classification to determine the presence of explosive dusts or gases.

ATEX polypropylene fans are carbon loaded to reduce static discharge in hazardous environments. Carbon loading is a process in which carbon particles or fibres are incorporated into the polypropylene material during manufacturing. The addition of carbon to polypropylene enhances conductivity allowing it to dissipate accumulated static charge more effectively, minimising the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD). Static discharge can be a concern in certain environments where flammable or explosive substances are present. Where airflow passes through the fan blades, friction can generate static charges on the fan surfaces. In environments with potentially combustible materials, static charges can potentially ignite or trigger an explosion.

The ATEX S50 is supplied with an inverter as standard, benefitting from an easy stop/start function and enhanced speed control which allows for efficient energy consumption. The moulded carbon loaded polypropylene prevents static discharges (one of the major ignition sources in ATEX environments) and is a corrosion resistant material which can withstand harsh chemical environments and adverse weather conditions. It holds many benefits over GRP and stainless-steel materials.

In terms of supplying ATEX fans, the Axair team have completed extensive training in ATEX regulations and follow strict protocol. They have a duty of care to ensure all customers are aware that it is strictly the responsibility of the end user to perform a DSEAR risk assessment to ensure that flameproof zones are properly defined in terms recognised by ATEX 2014/34/EU. Once the end user has supplied the correct ATEX coding specifications their team of experts can supply a suitable fan for your application. If anyone requires additional training in ATEX, Axair advise to contact an independent body for assistance.
