Advances in plasma medicine with atmospheric pressure mass spectrometry

Jul 22 2024

Hiden Analytical is pleased to announce significant progress in plasma medicine with its advanced atmospheric plasma technology. As a pioneer in analytical instrumentation, Hiden is driving research into the therapeutic applications of ‘cold’ atmospheric plasmas, aiming to enhance wound healing and potentially inhibit tumour growth.

Recent developments have spotlighted the role of atmospheric plasmas in medical science, where their integration with plasma physics is paving the way for novel treatments of infected wounds and pathogen-related skin diseases. Cold atmospheric plasma devices, engineered for these specific applications, use a controlled flow of gas ionised by DBD or DC plasma sources to deliver targeted therapeutic effects.

These treatments have shown remarkable success in speeding up the healing of infected wounds by significantly reducing bacterial presence. This improvement is attributed to the actions of oxygen and nitrogen ions and UV radiation produced during the plasma treatment.

A central element of Hiden Analytical's contribution is the HPR-60 MBMS (Molecular Beam Mass Spectrometry) system. This advanced instrument is crucial for characterising the plasma used in medical treatments, enabling precise control over power, gas species, and flow rates. The HPR-60 MBMS provides comprehensive analysis of plasma ions' mass and energy, ensuring the optimal effectiveness of plasma treatments.

The HPR-60 MBMS features a unique three-stage skimmer cone design that creates a supersonic ‘silent’ region, preserving the integrity of sampled species and enhancing the accuracy of mass and energy analysis under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Its compatibility with the EQP and EPIC mass spectrometer ranges, with mass options up to 5000 amu, makes it ideal for analysing complex hydrated cluster species involved in atmospheric plasma processes.

Hiden Analytical is keen to advance its research and development efforts in this ground-breaking field. The company remains dedicated to delivering innovative solutions that enhance health outcomes and advance medical treatments worldwide.
