New Centre to Co-Locate Research and Education
Jan 10 2014
A new £42m Centre for Medicine is set to become the ‘hub’ for leading medical academics in Leicester, as it will draw together cutting-edge medical research and education for the first time under one roof at the city’s University.
Over one third of the new centre, due for completion in 2015, will be dedicated to applied research forming the focal point for the University’s world-leading academics, who work with and across associated research and clinical centres throughout the county, including the University’s Biomedical Research Units, the Cardiovascular Research Centre, the Leicester Diabetes Centre, the Stroke and Kidney research teams.
Professor David Wynford-Thomas, Dean of the School of Medicine and Head of the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology at the University of Leicester said: “This new Centre will give Leicester medical students probably the most advanced environment and facilities in which to study medicine in the UK.
"It will also act as a hub for the University’s research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of some of today’s major health problems, as well as housing much-needed research aimed at finding new ways to improve quality and safety in the NHS. As such, it represents a shining example of the University of Leicester’s ongoing commitment to 'research-led teaching'."
It is estimated that more than one in 20 people in the UK has diabetes; someone is hit by a stroke every five minutes and more people die from chronic respiratory disease than breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined.
The new Centre, covering 12,836 square metres, will house the departments of Medical Education, Health Sciences, Psychology and Social Work.
