Pittcon 2016 SSP Award Recipient Announced
May 19 2015
Pittcon and its sponsoring society, The Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) are pleased to announce Juergen Popp as the recipient of the 2016 Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award. Popp studied chemistry at the universities of Erlangen and Wuerzburg, Germany. Since 2002, he has been a chair for Physical Chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena, and in 2006, became the Director of the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena. He has published more than 540 journal papers, has been named as an inventor on 12 patents in the field of spectroscopic instrumentation and is the founding editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Biophotonics.
In 2012, he received an honorary doctoral degree from Babe?-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Professor Juergen Popp is fellow of SAS and SPIE and is the recipient of the 2013 Robert Kellner Lecture Award.
The SSP Award, established in 1957, honours an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the field of spectroscopy. Popp’s core research focus is biophotonics, i.e., the development and application of frequency-, time- and spatially resolved innovative laser microspectroscopical methods and techniques for biomedical diagnostics as well as environmental and food analysis. Corner stones are the development and application of linear and non-linear Raman-technologies with particular focus on clinical diagnosis. In this context, Raman methods are utilised and developed according to the needs of pathology, oncology, and infection/ sepsis.
The award will be accepted during the week at Pittcon 2016 which will be held March 6-10, in Atlanta, Georgia.
