Investigating Neurodegenerative Conditions in a Microgravity Environment

AMSBIO, a leading supplier of human cell lines and research tools, announces its partnership with WARR Space Labs, a student group from the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Together, they embark on an exciting project aimed at advancing our understanding of neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, through spaceborne experiments. This collaboration represents a remarkable opportunity to explore the effects of microgravity on these conditions, potentially unlocking new insights that could lead to innovative therapeutic approaches in the future.

The ADDONISS (Ageing and Degenerative Diseases of Neurons on the ISS) project's primary objective is to conduct pioneering research on neuronal cell cultures within the microgravity setting of the International Space Station (ISS). AMSBIO plays a crucial role in this endeavour by providing the SH-SY5Y/GFP stable cell line and contributing €1000 in support of the team's funding costs during their research at NASA laboratories.

Selina Kanamüller, a member of WARR Space Labs student team at TUM, said: “The experience of getting to conduct research in NASA laboratories has been unforgettable. Thanks to the help of AMSBIO and our extensive preparations for more than a year, everything went well.”

On 15th March the experiment was successfully transported to the ISS via the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. At present, the WARR Space Labs team is currently analysing the data collected from the experiment. As they await the results of the ADDONISS project, there is considerable anticipation surrounding the potential breakthroughs it could offer to Alzheimer's research and the wider domain of neurodegenerative disease research. The promising findings could pave the way for significant advancements in our understanding and treatment of these challenging conditions.

AMSBIO stands as a prominent global supplier, offering a comprehensive range of ready-to-use human cell lines, encompassing receptor, ion channel, cell signalling, phosphodiesterase, and CRE recombinase lines. Rigorous validation processes are employed by the company to ensure that these cell lines deliver the highest quality products, empowering researchers with the utmost support for their scientific investigations.
