The ratio of starting material to sample recovery is a decisive factor in laboratory work, and not just for small sample quantities. By realising a particularly compact design, Retsch has successfully mastered two challenges at once with the SM 50. On the one hand, all the paths travelled by the sample inside the mill have been reduced to a minimum. Less sample residue thanks to a smaller surface area in an airflow-optimised design, which, especially in combination with the cyclone system integrated into the housing for the first time, enables virtually residue-free sample recovery. On the other hand, the small dimensions make the SM 50 an extremely space-saving laboratory device without sacrificing cutting performance. This is ensured by a powerful 1.5 kW drive with a standard single-phase power plug and rotational speed up to 4,000 rpm. However, the actual masterpiece of the SM 50 is a modular system that sets new standards in terms of cleanliness, sample safety and process speed.

Total Access Concept - grinding, cleaning and retooling in record time

The EasyInspect hopper provides users access to all components involved in the grinding process for the first time. The hopper design supports the intake of monolithic, granular and fibrous sample parts up to 50 x 50 mm. In flatter dimensions, even longer individual pieces can be filled in here. The entire inner workings are conveniently exposed via a door opening: from the hopper to the collector. 

EasyHandling: The modular design of the single components in the form of an innovative Push-fit milling chamber is unique in the world and leads to EasyClean. 
Not only the rotor, sieve and cyclone, but for the first time also the entire milling chamber can be removed by tool-less Push-fit system. And cleaned by the user in a time-saving and particularly thorough manner with liquid or any preferred cleaning agents. This reduces changeover times between various milling processes. At the same time, it ensures unrivalled hygienic cleanliness of the entire milling components, minimising the risk of sample contamination. The Push-fit milling chamber is available in different material versions and enables even smarter retooling processes for multiple purchases. Permanently installed components such as the EasyInspect hopper or the milling chamber holder impress with their rounded design and can be cleaned effortlessly using air pressure, brushes, vacuum cleaner, cleaning cloths, etc. 

The result: less changeover and maintenance required, more grinding processes. Thanks to the simple replacement of the most important wear parts, the SM 50 also impresses in terms of sustainability: an extended service life that ultimately reduces costs.

Variable accessories for variable raw materials

The SM 50 offers solutions for various industries such as agriculture, recycling, food and feed industry or pharmaceutical companies. The integrated cyclone ensures a high degree of separation, no dust pollution and almost complete recovery of the sample material, even with slightly greasy and sticky substances such as those found in animal feed. Dusty samples such as herbs, bark or dried vegetables can be ground to particle sizes of less than 200 µm. An efficient feed mechanism utilising the hopper flap allows voluminous, fluffy and light samples to be processed with uniform discharge. Even soft materials such as feathers, textiles or hay, which change their volume considerably during the grinding process (e.g. become fluffy or powdery) can be reliably processed and collected almost residue-free.

Medium-hard, tough, elastic and fibrous materials such as children's toys and preforms, pieces of wood or dry feed such as chewing bones for dogs are easy to handle thanks to the large feed hopper. With its powerful 1.5 kW motor, high speeds of up to 4,000 rpm and a rotor diameter of 130 mm, the SM 50 grinds even large pieces efficiently and impressively. The cyclone technology transports the sample material quickly to the collector and minimises heat generation in the grinding chamber. In addition, liquid nitrogen can be used to cool or embrittle softer materials.
