Many vacuum filtrations are still being carried out using water jet pumps. In laboratories where filtration is in frequent use, water consumption and the time needed for each filtration step are definitely significant cost factors. If hazardous substances are contained within the filtrate, then this can also lead to contamination of the wastewater.

Single-stage pumps with an ultimate vacuum down to 70 mbar are the logical choice also for filtration of clear and particle free liquids, e.g., for the determination of sources of microbial contaminations by ‘membrane filtration’. For vacuum regulation as prescribed in the procedure for colony counting of drinking water there is an optional upgrade to include vacuum gauge and manual regulation valve. Here the ME 1 pump series with 100 mbar ultimate vacuum and a gas throughput of 0.7m³/h offers a proven and flexible solution. For multiport filtrations with 3- and 6-place vacuum manifolds also stronger single-stage pumps of the bigger NT series are available. Two-stage pumps of the MZ 2NT family with their ultimate vacuum of 7 mbar are ideal for accelerating filtrations with suspended solids containing samples, or for sterile filtrations of supernatants.
