Leading Design Consultancy focuses on new Lens Production Facility
Mar 20 2014
Morgan Sindall Professional Services (MSPS), the multidisciplinary design consultancy, has won a significant contract for a world-leading life sciences business to support the design and build of a new, best-in-class production facility for completion in 2015.
Rayner Intraocular Lenses are building a new state-of-the-art facility to meet global demand. MSPS is providing the civil and structural, process, mechanical and electrical, architectural, BREEAM and CDM services for the new development.
The consultancy, which has designed over 2 million ft2 of clean room space over the past 20 years, was tasked with developing options for the refurbishment of an alternative building as well as the selected option of a new, highly-efficient facility.
Mark Dickson, Director for Manufacturing and Life Sciences said that MSPS was chosen for its leading experience in complex manufacturing: “We have delivered a design that makes intelligent use of internal space to ensure increased output and a reduction in operating costs. Our design goes beyond building regulations to reduce energy consumption, which is detailed on a per lens basis,” he explained.
“The facility is designed to achieve BREEAM ‘very good’ status for the low carbon technology used in the facility.”
MSPS’ front-end engineering and process skills were employed to develop User Requirement Specifications and the multidisciplinary design solution was developed in a BIM environment, co-ordinated through Revit in order that MSPS could clearly and visually communicate the design’s attributes and benefits. Part of the process engineering consultation was in the design of bespoke equipment; MSPS’ role was to identify the equipment specification and effectively translate these detailed and exacting requirements to the supplying vendors. This equipment will deliver the greatest efficiency and benefits to the business’ production.
Martin Jamieson, Rayner CEO commented that: “In partnership with MSPS Rayner will deliver a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility producing intraocular lenses for sale to markets worldwide. The decision to base the facility in the UK is a tribute to the quality and productivity leap that will be achieved in this country. Rayner will also move its global headquarters to the new facility.”
