Combined Particle Size and Shape Analysis with Cilas Instruments
Nov 24 2008
The determination of particle sizes and morphological analysis can be extremely useful in various industrial sectors, such as in building materials production, chemistry or in the pharmaceutical industry.
The importance of particle morphology may be demonstrated, for example, by the intrinsic viscosity value for the solution, since this has an effect on the thixotropic behaviour of viscous solutions. The presence of residual porosity and interconnection between pores are directly linked to the mechanical properties of compacted materials. As with construction materials, compaction of powders in the manufacture of compressed medications, which may be handled without crumbling, is dependent on particle shape. The optimisation of the morphology of powders of active agents and excipients has an effect on how they dissolve, and on their activity into the human body.
CILAS particle size measurement laser diffraction coupled with morphological analysis of the same sample provides precise data on the state of dispersion in a liquid-phase process. The basic parameters for characterising the morphology of particles are essential for quantifying particle shapes and can be of use in numerous fields of application a key step in many industrial sectors and in research and development.
