New CO2 incubator shaker with 180°C sterilisation routine

Eppendorf has unveiled the CellXpert® CS220, the first CO2 incubator shaker on the market equipped with an integrated 180°C sterilisation routine. This innovative solution is designed to enhance the production of complex recombinant proteins, viral vectors in mammalian cells, and bioreactor starter cultures, which typically rely on shake flask cultures.

Maria Mattern, who leads innovations in Eppendorf’s shaker and CO2 incubator portfolio, emphasised that the CellXpert® CS220 addresses the pressing need for improved contamination prevention in the industry. “Our new product was specifically developed to expedite mammalian shake flask culture projects while adhering to higher contamination prevention standards,” she stated.

Unlike existing CO2 incubator shakers, which are primarily microbiological shakers with optional CO2 control, the CellXpert® CS220 has superior cleanability and sterilisation capabilities. "Most devices currently on the market fall short in addressing contamination risks, particularly viruses and Mycoplasma, which can significantly affect project timelines and budgets," Mattern noted.

Manufactured in Hamburg, Germany, the CellXpert® CS220 is the first device to implement established contamination protection standards for CO2 incubator-based cell cultivation, featuring a 180°C sterilisation process. It simplifies disinfection thanks to its design, which eliminates drive wheels, cover sheets, cables, and heating fins from the stainless-steel chamber. Additionally, the CellXpert® CS220 offers up to 40% higher flask capacity and the highest platform size-to-footprint ratio available.

“We are excited to introduce this latest addition to our CellXpert family, further enhancing our comprehensive cell culture portfolio that includes CO2 incubators, shakers, high-speed centrifuges, and bioprocess equipment,” said Mattern.
