Supporting global efforts to reduce plastic pollution
Jan 06 2025
Integra Biosciences has partnered with CleanHub to support plastic waste collection projects in developing countries, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. Each year, Integra donates to a meaningful cause, and in 2024, its contribution is helping to prevent plastic pollution in coastal regions.
More than 2 billion people worldwide lack access to proper waste management, leading to vast amounts of plastic entering the ocean - equivalent to a garbage truck’s worth every minute. This pollution threatens marine life, causes the deaths of millions of sea creatures annually, and introduces microplastics into the food chain. Some plastics even contain toxic chemicals linked to health risks.
CleanHub focuses on tackling plastic pollution at its source - on land - by establishing extensive waste collection networks in coastal communities, now reaching over 225,000 households. Recyclable plastics are sorted and processed locally, while non-recyclables are repurposed as fuel in energy-intensive industries like cement production. To date, CleanHub and its partners have removed over 11.7 million kilograms of plastic from homes, businesses, and beaches, stopping it from reaching the ocean.
“Integra is deeply committed to sustainability, and we are proud to support CleanHub’s vital efforts,” said Dr. Ursula Leuthold, Sustainability Coordinator at Integra Biosciences. “Our funding has enabled the collection of nearly 11,800 kg of plastic waste from communities and waterways in 2024, helping to clean up our blue planet for future generations.”
