Automated Apparent Total Nitrosamine Analysis for the Carbon Capture Industry
Jun 26 2023
Absorption, or carbon scrubbing, with amines is the most widely used commercial system for the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the exhaust of chemical plants, biomass plants or from burning fossil fuels. Carbon capture is seen as one of the main ways to reduce CO2 to net zero, i.e., remove atmospheric CO2 at the same rate as it is released through industrial processes.
Specific amines have been developed to remove the CO2 at greater efficiencies than previously used, and their identities are closely guarded secrets. To detect nitrosamines using LC-MSMS or GC-MSMS systems, then standards for each specific nitrosamine that can be formed from the amine must be synthesised and purified to facilitate their detection and quantification. However, using the Ellutia Apparent Total Nitrosamine Analyser, the concentration of the nitrosamine molecule is calculated, allowing any nitrosamine standard to be used to generate a calibration curve and all nitrosamines to be quantitated as a whole, rather than individually.
The Apparent Total Nitrosamine Analyser can be used to test the nitrosamine content of the amine, wastewater and environmental samples; and in conjunction with the Ellutia ThermoSorb-N, the system can test for airborne nitrosamines from the exhaust stack.
Since the specific amine can not be determined during the analysis, this would allow a Contract Analysis laboratory to offer these services without fear of revealing potentially confidential information, should the carbon capture facility not have the infrastructure or staff to carry out the analyses.
To learn more about the automated total nitrosamine analyser and take the next step towards ensuring the safety of your carbon capture sites by booking an initial free consultation to discuss your nitrosamine testing requirements, visit Ellutia's website.
