Photonex 2015 : Exciting Programme Mix at Two-Day Event

Xmark Media the organiser of Photonex 2015, has announced a mixture of a programmes and meetings aimed at bringing together many aspects of industry and research, helping to develop strong business relationships, to research solutions, to examine applications for photonics and technology for manufacturing. This free-to-attend conference and exhibition returns to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on 14th and 15th October.

Advancing Nano-Spectroscopy and Bio-Imaging

Significant advances in the development of optical techniques have led to an ever increasing role of photonics in the study of various problems in biological and chemical sciences, in medicine and clinical sciences. Researchers are continually looking for better ways to analyse complex processes and photonics underpins many of the most promising approaches for medical diagnosis, drug development, therapeutic intervention and other clinical and life science applications.

With integration of technologies a key message, this meeting provides the audience with the experience to make the idea come to life with sessions designed for attendees to raise, discuss and solve problems with speakers and fellow delegates. One of the organising Technical Programme Committee and co-chairperson for the meeting is Dr Sumeet Mahajan, an Associate Professor in Life Science Interfaces at the University of Southampton: “The 2015 meeting brings together the disciplines of nano-science/technology, spectroscopy and imaging. There is incredible overlap between these; definitely more than most people would realise, especially in the context of applications in biology and medicine. The interdisciplinary nature of this year's conference really excites me as I see it as the ideal opportunity for cross-fertilisation of ideas. It is my firm belief that the solutions to current technological/societal problems inherently require an interdisciplinary approach and also that the most exciting things happen at the interfaces of different disciplines. I hope our conference will be able to showcase these ideas and further encourage young scientists and engineers working in these areas.

Annual meeting on High Power Diode Lasers & Systems

To be held as part of the Enlighten Conference, attendees will hear about advances in diode lasers and diode pumped lasers. These advances are reflected in the current drive to develop kW-class direct diode laser systems. At the same time, advances in diode pump lasers continue to contribute to advances in solid state and fibre lasers. Eric Larkins, Chair of the Technical Programme Committee and Professor of Optoelectronics at the University of Nottingham, said: “This is an exciting time for high-power diode lasers, with advances being made in brightness, beam combining and the development of kW-class direct diode lasers for industrial applications. Having seen an increase in delegate numbers year on year, we are delighted that we are holding this event for the eighth time alongside the UK’s premier networking/showcasing event for photonics research and technology. This year’s speaker programme will showcase the most significant developments of the last twelve months.” A tour of the nearby Manufacturing Technology Centre (one of Innovate UK’s technology catapults) where work is being undertaken to develop some of these advanced laser-based manufacturing processes., has also been arranged.
HPDLS is organised by the Scottish Chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society and is co-sponsored by the IEEE Photonics Society.
The 3rd biennial Optical Metrology meeting

This meeting will focus on Optical techniques that are increasingly being used to perform high accuracy measurements in aerospace, automotive and precision manufacturing. One factor driving this growth is the industry need for higher product quality and increased production numbers. Another is the development of technologies which serve the market place, namely optical sources, detectors, computing power and electronics. The meeting will bring together leaders from industry, research institutes and universities to present and discuss ways of applying the latest technologies and how these are applied to provide solutions in the field of optical metrology. One of the organising Technical Programme Committee and co-chairperson for the meeting is Dr Roger Groves, Head of the Delft Aerospace Non-Destructive Testing Laboratory: “The 2015 meeting will highlight Optical Metrology as a core element of smart manufacturing, enabling both high quality production of complex materials and efficient production through automation. It is a Key Enabling Technology for the Factories of the Future helping the UK to retain international competitiveness in this area.”
Attendees may also wish to attend “Laser Processes in Ultra Precision Manufacturing” which is held on the following day.

Co-located with Photonex is Vacuum Expo, an event dedicated to vacuum technologies. There is significant technology overlap such as when photonics is applied for surface analysis or when fibre optics are used for securing access to the vacuum environment.

Potential visitors and contributors to the scientific programme are encouraged to visit Photonex website (www.photonex.org) and to register to visit today.
