Summer studentships

Jan 29 2015

In 2015 The Chromatographic Society (ChromSoc), British Mass Spectrometry Society (BMSS), RSC Separation Science Group (SSG) and the RSC’s NorthWest Analytical Division (NWAD) will again fund approximately six to ten projects to a maximum value of £1500 per studentship.

In summer 2014, ChromSoc funded the following projects:

“GC-MS profiling of honey bee colony volatiles as an alternative indicator of honeybee disease(s): A preliminary study”, supervised by Dr Falko Drijfhout, Keele University, Staffordshire.

and

“Developing nanoflow-compatible chromatographic separations for longer, larger peptides generated by chemical cleavage”, supervised by Dr Sarah Hart, Keele University, Staffordshire.

The ChromSoc and BMSS will consider only projects that contain a strong separation focus or mass spectrometry focus, respectively.  Consideration for funding from RSC’s NorthWest Analytical Division (NWAD) is restricted to those supervisors who qualify on geographical location grounds.  Each application will be independently assessed by the societies advisory board (containing ChromSoc, BMSS, RSC SSG and NWAD representatives), who will rank and select the projects that will receive funding. As in previous rounds (2007-2014), some degree of matched funding will be looked upon favourably.

The student/supervisor team must produce a project report, for which a template will be provided, describing the results of their project once completed. This report will be published in Chromatography Today or Mass Matters, and may also appear on the ChromSoc and/or BMSS website. Delayed publication (so as not to prejudice journal article submission) can be negotiated, but report submission must be on time.  Financial support from the sponsoring society/ies (ChromSoc, BMSS, RSC SSG &/or NWAD) must be specifically acknowledged in all conference presentations/publications resulting from the student’s work.

For more information on the application process, criteria and forms visit the society websites. The application process which started January 2015 will close in approximately mid-March 2015 and applicants will be informed of the decision of the Advisory Board by the end of April 2015. Project reports must be returned to the funding Society within 6 weeks of project end dates. If you have any questions please contact the societies: www.chromsoc and www.bmss.org.uk
