mmc2017 Manchester - Expanded Representation

Aug 15 2016

Preparations are in full swing for The Microscience Microscopy Congress in 2017, with six parallel conference sessions, an exhibition with more than 100 companies represented and features such as pre-event workshops and turn-up-and-learn training opportunities.

For next year the RMS have announced the addition of both the Scottish Microscopy Group (SMG) and the Microscopy Society of Ireland (MSI) at mmc2017. Hosting their own sessions both the SMG and MSI will welcome abstracts from researchers in the life and physical sciences to sit alongside their own speakers as part of the scientific programme .Abstract Submission will open in November 2016 with the Call for Papers announced shortly before.

Dr Kerry Thompson, Secretary of the MSI said "“The Microscopy Society of Ireland (an all-island society) has a strong history of collaborations with other like-minded societies, in particular the Scottish Microscopy Group and the Royal Microscopical Society. It is a very natural progression to be actively involved in organising sessions at mmc2017 and I think MSI members will enjoy the event – particularly its breadth and scale - and bring something extra to it.”

To help showcase as much original material as possible, mmc2017 will be including flash talks as part of the scientific programme. Trialled with great success at the EMAG 2016 conference, presenters give a 5 minute talk during one of the conference sessions; this is  in addition to displaying a poster in the mmc2017 poster village, where more informal discussions can take place during lunchtimes and allocated poster sessions.

Dr Sarah Haigh, EMAG chair said "“We trialled Flash Talks at this year’s EMAG Conference and they were very popular – both for the presenters and the audiences. They bring interesting variety and they provide great opportunities to test your presenting skills, especially for student researchers. I am very pleased to see them within the Microscience programme. They will definitely enhance the programme allowing a greater variety of speakers and acting as further enticement to attend the poster sessions.”

“Both the RMS and the IOP EMAG committee are committed to promoting opportunities for Early Career Researchers. In addition to the Flash Talks there is a range of mmc2017 bursaries to assist with travel. If you are looking to gain experience of a large-scale conference, with a thriving series of research talks and some outstanding plenary speakers then mmc2017 is a great place to start, and I would encourage anyone who is active in microscopy to look at the programme and see where your work fits in.”

To be eligible to present a flash talk, simply submit your abstract as normal. As your work reaches the review stage you will be allocated either a flash talk, oral or poster presentation. Abstract Submission will open in November 2016 with the Call for Papers announced shortly before. By presenting a flash talk, you can perfect your presentation skills, showcase your work to a wider audience and sit alongside a line-up of impressive invited and plenary speakers, whilst still having the opportunity for more informal questions and answers at your poster. It really is a great opportunity at an event as large as the Microscience Microscopy Congress.
