Global Prize for Distinguished Scientists Launched by RMS

An exciting new award to honour the outstanding achievements of established researchers working in any area of microscopy or flow cytometry has been announced by the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS)

Nominations for the Distinguished Scientist Award are now being invited, with candidates generally expected to have run their own research lab for more than 10 years. It is the first time the Society has launched a global prize since establishing its Medal Series in 2014.

The RMS expects to award up to five Distinguished Scientist Awards per year. The prize is open to applicants worldwide and will take the form of a certificate.

RMS President Michelle Peckham said: “Looking at our existing Medal Series and other established RMS prizes, we felt there was a need to fill the gap between the Section Medals, which are awarded to those in the first 10 years of their career and our Honorary Fellowships.

"It’s an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of established senior researchers, whose long-term contributions deserve to be highlighted and recognised.”

Applicants, who should be nominated by a colleague, are asked to submit a curriculum vitae (CV), a list of all their publications, a short resumé (300 words) of their contributions together with a list of their top 5 publications, along with a covering letter to the RMS office (Debbie Hunt debbie@rms.org.uk) stating they wish to be considered for this award. 1-2 additional letters of support from colleagues would normally be expected.

Applications should be submitted as soon as possible, with a deadline of 30 September 2019. The winners will be announced in November 2019.
