Five Year Support Package for NHS Research

£816m is being invested by the Government into a 5-year package to support NHS research including issues and treatments around mental health, dementia and antimicrobial resistance. Mental health research will see funding increase to nearly £70 million, dementia to over £45 million, deafness and hearing problems will receive over £15 million and antimicrobial resistance research rises to around £45 million.

The funding has been awarded to 20 NHS and university partnerships across England through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)

London and the South East, including Imperial College Healthcare Trust, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will receive nearly £700m to aid medical research.

MedCity’s Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Haywood said: “This funding – the largest ever invested into translational health research – will help our life sciences industry discover treatments for some of the toughest diseases and mental health problems,” said MedCity’s CEO Sarah Haywood.  “From developing cardiovascular devices, to delivering life-changing cell and gene therapies, the 11 biomedical research centres in London and the South East are leading the way on diagnostics, prevention and care management.

“Major investments at Kings, UCL, Imperial, Oxford and Cambridge are providing a valuable boost to ground-breaking research in the world-leading golden triangle and reflect the depth and breadth of the excellence and innovation taking place across our region.”
