5 Reasons Why Kids Should Spend More Time on Science

May 15 2015

For many children, the classroom can be a boring place to be. However, the school science lab can offer the opportunity to buck that trend by injecting excitement and unpredictability into the learning process. Whether it’s making a papier-mâché volcano erupt lava, inspecting solvents through a microscope or making your hair stand on end using a Van de Graaff generator, science can be just the adventure outlet that kids need at school.

Here are five reasons why encouraging an affinity with science is beneficial to every child’s life – read on and help them make the lead from Bunsen burners to 3D printers to the technology and trends of tomorrow.

1)Science Captures the Imagination

Young inquisitive minds are full of questions about everything they see, and science can help to explain the natural phenomena they experience every day. Why is the sky blue? Ask science. How do we know the Earth is round? Ask science. Where does rain come from? Ask science.

Science can even help to ask fantastical questions, such as how fast does Santa travel? Though such questions have no basis in reality, they do engage children’s minds and science can help to provide logical answers.

2)Science Develops the Brain

A scientific approach to life will help children develop a healthy dose of scepticism and the cognitive skills necessary to verify their scepticism. If there’s one thing we should be teaching our young ones, it’s to constantly question the world around them, rather than rely on received knowledge or wisdom. This path leads to self-improvement, greater understand and progression.

Furthermore, the imperative relationship between theory and empirical evidence which founds the basis for all scientific thought can be adapted and developed in all areas of human study. Developing such skills are paramount to a child’s development.

3)Science Teaches Perseverance and Patience

The trial and error aspect of science teaches kids the importance of patience. In today’s increasingly fast-paced world, it seems like the younger generation aren’t always prepared to wait for their demands to be met. Science is a fantastic method of showing them what can be benefited from sticking to a task and seeing it through until the end.

Furthermore, it also is a great way of learning valuable problem-solving skills and integrating these into a team unit, thus improving teamwork and communication.

4)Science Instils Self-Belief

Once kids have used scientific methods to conquer a real problem and discovered the answer of their own volition, it will give them the confidence that is necessary for them to believe they are an important part of this world – and that they have the power to change it.

Such development of self-belief is an integral part in the development of any youngster as they make the difficult transition from child to adolescent to adult.

5)Science Offers Employment

The world we live in has never been more dependent on science and technology for answers and innovation. The fields of pharmaceuticals, medicine, energy production and environmental conservation are just a handful of the areas in which children with a scientific background can excel.

For all of these reasons and more, it’s a great idea to encourage your young one to pursue studies in a scientific capacity… who knows, they could be the next Albert Einstein!
