Active air sampling for the determination of mercury
Mar 26 2025
The PSA Air Sentinel is an unattended ambient air, active sampling device that provides sampling with an accurate air volume for mercury in air studies. This is especially useful in conjunction with Hg-CEMS technology as it provides a greater understanding around areas of point source pollution and allows fence line and local environment monitoring.
The sample is actively carried over PSA’s gold Amasil™ traps to preconcentrate any Hg that may be present. Depending on the location remoteness and other requirements the system may be powered by a using a DC power pack, or the integrated rechargeable battery pack with solar panel options. The Air Sentinel, compete with mercury trap (Amasil) and solar panel option is shown below.
The Air Sentinel offers several key user benefits, ensuring accurate and reliable performance for air quality monitoring. It measures and logs accurate sample flow rates, which allows for precise volume calculations. These calculations are unaffected by weather conditions or power fluctuations. With a typical flow rate of 12L/h, the Air Sentinel allows for much greater mercury mass loading in a short time frame, leading to larger and more comprehensive data sets. The system provides lower measurement uncertainty due to larger and accurate sample volumes, and it supports both short and long-term event monitoring. This results in faster turnaround of analysis.
The Air Sentinel can continuously sample for up to 8 days without the need for solar charging, with the ability to extend sampling periods using solar panel charging. It is designed for easy deployment and installation, offering various panel mounting options. The system complies with USEPA, ASTM, ISO, and CEN methods and can perform sampling for atmospheric speciation measurements, including particulate and oxidized mercury. It also supports field and easy flow calibration, and users can select sampling periods ranging from minutes to months.
Additionally, the Air Sentinel features reusable Amasil collection traps and comes with a weatherproof cabinet suitable for harsh environments. It is also capable of measuring other air components, such as particulate matter, benzene, VOCs, and dioxins.
