For many analysts, routine laser diffraction particle size analysis simply involves loading the sample and pushing a button to begin measurement. Reaching this desirable endpoint requires the definition of a reliable and reproducible method, which can be automated through the use of standard operating procedures and appropriate software. Sampling, sample preparation and dispersion, and measurement conditions can all impact the data obtained and must therefore be rigorously and systematically considered. For those unfamiliar with laser diffraction this can sometimes appear to be the biggest hurdle to employing the technique. Over the last decade considerable progress has been made in the area of method development, by Malvern and others. The latest version of ISO13320 reflects this and includes a substantial amount of advice.
