Bruker Nano, your supplier of “unconventional” XRF spectrometers
Jul 06 2011
Bruker Nano manufactures a wide range of X-ray fluorescence spectrometers that offer more than conventional XRF bulk analysis. They are either spatially resolving like our M series and the ARTAX or highly sensitive for trace elements like the S2 PICOFOX.
Spatial resolution in XRF, normally referred to as µ-XRF, offers important additional information. It is not only possible to determine the elemental composition but also to pinpoint the area where specific elements are located in the sample and measure their concentration at that position. Bruker’s range of µ-XRF spectrometers differ in the spatial resolution, user comfort and efficiency offered. Standard instruments like the M1 MISTRAL and M1 ORA are equipped with a collimator that reduces the beam diameter of the X-ray tube to around 0.1 to 1 mm (user choice dependent) , which is identical to the spatial resolution. The M1 MISTRAL is additionally equipped with a motorized stage to support exact sample positioning. Both instruments are equipped with a video microscope that allows accurate determination of the analysis spot. These instruments are typically used for (jewelry) alloy, metallic layer analysis and simple RoHS measurements. The better equipped M4 TORNADO has a large vacuum sample chamber for light element analysis and also features a motorized stage for sample mapping. Spatial resolution is typically around 25 µm for this instrument as it contains a glass capillary X-ray optics which focuses the beam on a very small and highly intense spot. This instrument covers a wide range of applications, including life science, geology and material science. Also part of the family is the portable ARTAX. This spectrometer attains a spot size of around 70 µm. It’s main purpose is the non-destructive analysis of works of art, but it can also be used in industry.
The total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometer S2 PICOFOX is the instrument of choice for fast simultaneous multi-element analysis with excellent sensitivity for traces. Depending on the specific element, detection limits in the low ppb-range are possible. The S2 PICOFOX is therefore also an ideal companion to ICP and AAS. It can be almost universally applied, in life science, nano-materials, environmental analysis, nutrients analysis and many more.
