West Suffolk Hospital Benefits from Diagnostic Reporting Service

When rising workloads in the histopathology department at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds dictated the need for extra resources, consultant histopathologist Dr Sheila Purdy turned to Backlogs online reporting service for interim support.

Launched in 2005, Backlogs provides a rapid diagnostic reporting service to the NHS for histopathology and cytology cases. Cases collected by medical courier are immediately assigned, according to clinical category, to an appropriate specialist within the company’s network of UK-based consultant pathologists. They in turn report directly on line so that information is quickly available through a unique, secure webbased system.

“Backlogs proved to be totally reliable, working to extremely high standards and doing a really good job on all cases”, said Dr Purdy. “We could always be certain that everything was being reported properly, and for me knowing who we were dealing with meant complete peace of mind.”

Current expansion of the histopathology team at West Suffolk Hospital will mean easier management of the day-to-day workload using in-house resources. However, Dr Purdy feels that it is “good to know Backlogs is there” should the need for extra cover arise in the future.
