Lovis 2001: Precision viscosity measurement with minimal sample volume
Mar 10 2025
Anton Paar introduces Lovis 2001, the new rolling-ball viscometer designed for high-precision viscosity measurements with minimal sample volume. Ideal for applications in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and life sciences, Lovis 2001 sets a new standard for measuring low-viscosity and shear-sensitive liquids with exceptional accuracy and efficiency.
Operating on the Hoeppler falling-ball principle, Lovis 2001 utilises an adjustable measurement angle to achieve precise dynamic viscosity measurements within a range of 0.2 mPa·s to 10,000 mPa·s. Lower measurement angles optimise conditions for shear-sensitive samples, while shear scans enable the extrapolation of shear-thinning behaviour to a hypothetical zero shear rate - improving comparability of viscosity data, for example, protein or biopolymer solutions. With sample volumes as low as 100 µL, Lovis 2001 is particularly suited for high-value or limited-quantity substances, maximising data collection while minimising waste. Additionally, the method has negligible impact on the sample, allowing for recovery and use in downstream analyses.
Lovis 2001’s advanced temperature control enhances both speed and precision. The integrated Peltier thermostat enables temperature regulation from 5°C to 100°C, with an optional cooling extension down to -40°C for specialised applications, maintaining a precision of 0.005°C. Furthermore, Lovis 2001 offers modular connectivity, seamlessly integrating with Anton Paar’s DMA density meters for simultaneous viscosity and density measurements. Its modular design also allows for the acquisition of additional physical parameters, such as refractive index or pH, when combined with Anton Paar instruments. An optional autosampler further improves efficiency by automating filling and cleaning processes, reducing handling errors, and increasing throughput.
Compliance and data integrity are key strengths of Lovis 2001. Fully adhering to standards including USP <913>, Ph. Eur. 2.2.49, and 21 CFR Part 11, it ensures regulatory compliance and secure data management in pharmaceutical and other regulated environments.
The new Lovis 2001 software features integrated polymer analysis tools that enhance productivity by reducing data handling errors while providing step-by-step measurement guidance. Offering maximum flexibility, it adapts to specific user needs while remaining easy to set up by default.
With its precision, adaptability, and compliance-ready design, Lovis 2001 is an indispensable tool for both specialised research and daily quality control viscosity measurements.
