AI-enhanced workflows for advanced cell culture research

Sep 03 2024

Leica Microsystems, a leader in microscopy and scientific instrumentation, is proud to announce the release of the Mateo FL, an AI-driven digital fluorescence microscope designed to enhance cell culture analysis in advanced research settings. The Mateo FL integrates transmitted light for label-free imaging with multi-channel fluorescence and automated analysis, revolutionising how laboratories conduct downstream experiments involving cell cultures.

Following in the footsteps of its counterpart, the Mateo TL, the Mateo FL merges user-friendly operation with a sleek, modern design. It offers advanced features for comprehensive cell analysis, including multi-modal imaging capabilities, AI-powered confluency assessments, rapid and precise cell counting, and smart measurements for evaluating transfection efficiency. Together, the Mateo TL and FL provide researchers with versatile tools to meet diverse experimental requirements.

“Mateo FL represents a significant advancement in digital microscopy, providing researchers at all levels with an intuitive solution to streamline their workflows and achieve immediate results,” said James O’Brien, Vice President of Life Sciences and Applied Solutions at Leica Microsystems. “This innovation helps scientists expedite their research, minimise contamination risks, and safeguard data integrity, ensuring dependable, reproducible outcomes in the lab.”

The Mateo FL is equipped with a suite of automated workflows that guarantee consistent results, even with complex cell culture samples. It delivers accurate cell counts in just five seconds, cutting down manual counting time by an average of 15 minutes. Additionally, the new automated phase contrast feature simplifies image acquisition, further enhancing workflow efficiency.

Designed with a compact, integrated structure, the Mateo FL minimises contamination risks by over 50% and boosts workflow efficiency by capturing both monochrome and color images without the need to switch devices during an experiment.

For laboratories requiring stringent data management, the Mateo FL includes built-in audit trails and user management functions, ensuring compliance with FDA 21 CFR Part 11 standards. This makes it an ideal choice for the pharmaceutical research sector, where secure data tracking is paramount.
