Sixth annual Sustainability Weeks focuses on rack reuse and recycling

Three weeks of passion for the environment

Starlab International, a laboratory product manufacturer based in Hamburg, is launching its 2024 Sustainability Weeks from 7 to 25 October, marking the sixth year of this environmental initiative. This year's event emphasises rack reuse and recycling, continuing the tradition of promoting sustainability in laboratory practices.

Ahead of the main event, Starlab held its fourth Clean-Up Day on 20 September, in partnership with Oclean. Around 40 employees from the Hamburg headquarters spent half a day clearing rubbish in the Neuer Höltigbaum Nature Reserve, while teams in the UK also joined the effort. “Clean-Up Day inspires our employees to actively protect the environment, carrying that same energy into Sustainability Weeks,” said Klaus Ambos, Starlab's President & CEO. “They become ambassadors, sharing their enthusiasm with local laboratories.”

During Sustainability Weeks, Starlab employees will visit over 100 laboratories across the UK, Italy, France, and Germany. These in-person sessions focus on reducing plastic waste and promoting the TipOne recycling service. These visits are designed to foster discussions and offer practical steps for embedding sustainability into daily lab operations.

Complementing the lab visits, Starlab will also host a series of seven webinars in multiple languages, targeting international audiences. The online events will share insights on how to integrate sustainability into laboratory work and guide labs in choosing environmentally-friendly products.

The growing success of Sustainability Weeks underscores the increasing importance of sustainability in the lab industry. In 2023, over 3,500 participants from universities, clinics, and labs joined 85 events. A standout feature was the planting of more than 3,000 cacti in TipOne racks, symbolising the daily commitment to sustainability. "The strong response highlights the need for sustainability, even during tough economic times," noted Ambos.

This year also introduces Starlab’s new campaign, ‘You are passionate for science’. This campaign reinforces the company’s core message - celebrating the dedication scientists bring to their research. "Now, more than ever, we must focus on what drives us," said Ambos. The campaign reflects Starlab’s commitment to supporting scientists, blending scientific excellence with environmental awareness.
