A world of medical possibilities and applications in one device

Jan 04 2017

Following the successful unveiling of the LumiPod, ITL were able to give visitors and exhibitors at MEDICA 2016 a glimpse into the future of diagnostics.

The LumiPod project has been deemed ‘the concept car of diagnostics’ and was created to showcase exactly what ITL are capable of. It’s a demonstrator of where the market is heading and has been designed to instil creativity and provide inspiration to others looking to develop a MedTech device.

The project provided a valuable opportunity for ITL’s designers and engineers to push the boundaries of modern technology as they embarked on a creative exploration to invent this MedTech demonstrator of possibilities.

The project was the brainchild of Mechanical Design Engineer - Sukie Whitehall and experienced Electronics Engineer Sam Kuske. Sukie, Sam and the LumiPod team realised that although ITL were well recognised as a proficient contract developer and manufacturer of medical devices, their creative expertise and innovative approach was often underestimated.

Sukie Whitehall says: “This is a really exciting project for us. It’s been designed to break the mould – the idea is that it can invoke some creativity in our clients and people who might want to work with us in the future. This is a demonstrator of where the market is going – and we believe that when visitors interact with it at the show they can’t help but apply their own ideas and think about future applications.”

ITL wanted to incorporate a variety of new ideas and applications into a singular instrument; including the development of their first ever app. The instrument serves to combine stylish, modern design with the efficiency and reliability that any laboratory would expect from a manufacturer with nearly 40 years’ experience behind them.

Features of the LumiPod include:

Near-field communication (NFC)

  • Touch-free sample recognition
  • Links the sample and results to a singular individual
  • Removes human error in ID input
  • Anti-counterfeiting
  • Data can be stored locally on an RFID tag

Wireless charging

  • High ingress protection
  • No trailing wires
  • Convenience
  • Portability to move around lab or clinic

Bluetooth Data Transmission

  • Freedom to monitor remotely
  • Real-time data analysis
  • Connection to a LIMS or other information management system
  • Improved EMC susceptibility performance

Visually and Audibly Responsive

  • Emotional feedback
  • See and hear alerts without monitoring

The LumiPod is an ideal representation of the company’s capabilities for the diagnostic space.

ITL plans to position themselves as a pioneer of leading technologies and are soon to be celebrating their 40th Anniversary in the medical and diagnostic sector. They are hoping to see more of these newer technologies added to their already impressive portfolio including; in-vitro diagnostics (IVD), point-of-care devices, cancer staging and treatment, surgical robots and next generation DNA sequencing.
